utricle /ˈjuːtrɪkl/ noun

The larger of the two fluid-filled cavities forming part of the labyrinth of the inner ear (the other being the sacculus). It contains hair cells and otoliths which send signals to the brain concerning the orientation of the head.  Plural noun: utriculi

Utriculi is currently published yearly  with new works of textual poetry, vispo, short fiction, flash fiction, essays, reviews, photographic art, and art.  We welcome all forms of EXPERIMENTAL LITERATURE AND ART THAT PUSH BOUNDARIES. We welcome submissions from artists and poets of all backgrounds and identities. 

This year’s submissions will be open starting  June 1, 2024 and will close on August 31, 2024.

Utriculi will be published in the fall of 2024. It will be available for purchase on Amazon.  It will also be available for reading on Sandy Press.

Submission Guidelines 

Format and Submission Method

  • All submissions must be sent to sandypress2021@gmail.com.
  • For written poetry, short fiction essays and reviews, we accept submissions in .doc, .docx, or .pdf formats as an attachment only. 
  • For visual art, submit high-resolution images in .jpeg or .png format as an attachment only. 
  • For word processor art: submit as high quality .jpeg or .png file.
  • Sound art will be considered in the future.

Content Guidelines:

  • Submissions should be original and previously unpublished. No simultaneous submissions are allowed.
  • AI will only be considered in exceptional circumstances. Anyone trying to pass off AI as their own work will be blacklisted.  

Length and Quantity

  • For poetry: submit up to five poems.
  • For short fiction: submit up to two pieces no longer than five pages per piece.
  • For flash fiction: submit up to two pieces no longer than two pages.
  • For essays and reviews: submit one piece no longer than ten pages.
  • For visual art: submit up to five pieces as high quality jpeg or png.
  • For word processor art: please submit up to five pieces in a 6×9 page size and Calbri (Body) font 11.
  • For all categories, only one submission per year.

Biography and Artist Statement 

  • Please include a short biography.  This is not optional.
  • Feel free to include a brief artist statement explaining the concept, inspiration, or process behind your work. This is optional but encouraged.

Rights, Permissions and Payments

  • By submitting your work, you grant Utriculi the right to publish it. However, you retain full copyright ownership.
  • There are no payments for accepted submissions.

Response Time

  • We will respond to all submissions within a couple of weeks. Please be patient with us as we carefully review each submission.
